Thursday, January 25th, 2007the fundamental problem with marketing / advertising is that it is not concerned with the product itself. marketing / advertising looks at everything else, from wide distribution to specific mental models to snappy ads. but it doesn’t care about the product. people think exactly the other way around, in my opinion. all they want is a good product.

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007I’ve been flown out to São Paulo. Invited to blog at what is arguably the coolest of events in town, and boldest of fashion weeks around the world. Asked to track down the coolest of the coolest. Spot shoes, shades, shops, textures, cuts and angles. Mingle with designers and models and bloggers and journalists and plenty of wannabes. Live and breathe this world for an entire week.
Just don’t tell anyone I don’t know a thing about fashion.
I still let my girlfriend pick my jeans and I prefer H&M over LVMH. I can’t tell the difference between cobalt and cornflower blue, and I truly, honestly, don’t know who these label-signing designy pros are.
My world revolves around other things. Some fun, some useless. I can spend go on and on explaining how and why MMORPG’s will change social interactions or write an essay about how Transparency Tyranny might bring down your brand.
So if you too are a lost cause in a world of mutable tastes and fleeting names, join me for a few days of naïve insights and desperate attempts to relate the SPFW to the little I know.
If not, you still have eighteen other kick-ass bloggers to pick and choose from.
P.S.: using intricate french literary references for title when you don’t want to sound smug is generally not a good idea. I’ll work on it.
P.S. 2: edited
P.S. 3: not posting it here after all. just because.

its all fun and games until someone has to explain what GSM is. and takes an hour to do so.

3h30
Sunday, January 21st, 2007it’s 3h30 in the morning and i had completely forgotten how noisy the city is.
not complaining.
noise = people = 24h city, which is something i quite like in the end.

city of locks and doors and walls
Saturday, January 20th, 2007I left my coats, jackets and sweaters in amsterdam and traveled over to São Paulo for a few days.
and I want to meet up with you. so call me at +55 11 8439 8634.
so i get home…
Thursday, January 18th, 2007and it’s dripping water like crazy in the staircase.
i fear the worst, go upstairs, and it turns out the wall which construction people have been opening up to install new pipes and electricity for the fourth floor is soaked and dripping.
i get inside, and in deed, the whole by that wall is soaked, too.
nothing destroyed (other than perhaps the vacuum cleaner and an old DSL modem that was here when we moved in), but the wall is dripping like crazy still.
call the landlord. they’re alarmed. will send someone.
fivethings
Thursday, January 18th, 2007Huub Koch tagged Boris who tagged Robert who tagged Tijs who tagged Katie who tagged Andy who tagged me. I should list five useless things that you, my dear reader, might or might not know about me:
- I’m a certified barista: Shortly before leaving São Paulo in 2005, I took a three day barista course at Café Santo Grão. The course covered everything you need to know about coffee (plantations, types, care) as well as everything related to producing a decent espresso. Fun.
- Falling down: I fell down a seven meter hole when I was four years old. A poorly placed lid covering a ventilation shaft from an underground garage apparently did not hold, so a friend and I fell down. We were rescued by firemen a while later and ended up in newspapers all over the world (kids falling down shafts is a big deal in seemingly secure swedish suburbs).
- University: I never had a clue about what I wanted to do in university (or when I grew up for that matter.) I was mostly torn between going back to Sweden to study engineering at KTH, move to the US and study at RISD or stay in Brazil and study just about anywhere. Ending up at ESPM (Advertising & Marketing) and later at an ad agency was pure chance.
- LEGO builder: Not once, but at three times did I and my best friend build a complete city made of LEGO bricks. (We were about eight years old). We’re talking a 2×2 meter plot of completely populated city with tall buildings, people, cars, parking garages, etc. For the third version of the city we even built a 2m tall tower in alternating colors.
- Tounge: When I was three or so I slipped on the stairs walking out of a swimming pool and bit my tounge pretty bad. Until today, I still have ~5mm cut all the way through my right tounge-tip.
